Phil Thompson's Music

Summer 1989, Fort Walton Beach, Florida.  John Williams, a friend who called himself "J.K. Willi," was a singer who played gigs in the FWB area with his wife, Cathy.  Nice couple, and I hung out with them often.

John played guitar and sang, usually floating between the styles of Neil Young and Jimmy Buffet.  Quality singer!  Often he'd stop by and sit in while Mike Weaver and I jammed with our "Shalimar Wrecking Crew" band.

In 1989 John asked me to help lay down some songs he'd written.  So we set up in my house (mancave/spare bedroom on Eccles Road), and recorded these (and, I remember, a fourth) songs into his 4-tracker.  I seem to remember it was a Vestax machine.

For each song, John would play guitar and I'd play the drums.  Once satisfied with these takes (I don't think we did many--if any--second takes) we'd record tracks 3 and 4; he sang I played the bass (probably one of Mike Weaver's basses.)

So far I've only found three of these songs, but feel lucky to have done so.  For a long time I thought I'd lost them.

Friends who were Country music fans insisted these were covers of popular country songs, and not originals (as John maintained).
