You might hesitate to call what my brother and I created in July 1998 jazz, but in the strictest sense of that term, it is. All but one song, that is. And it is still one of my favorites!
My return to the States from an overseas assignment put me an hour from home, and my brothers―both grown up, and serious musicians themselves―were close enough we could get together and create some goodies.
And so it was, on a Summer weekend evening in 1998, that Daniel came to visit and we recorded our second album as Mathom. Who Needs a Wife? was written by Daniel, on the spot. With lyrics in hand, together we created the music and put it on tape. (Obviously sound effects, production, etc. were done afterwards.)
But what I think is one of this album's coolest features are the back-and-forth joking around, which I recorded for the very purpose of working into the album. I captured this interposed banter (i.e. *fun with beer and the speed knob*), between jam sessions. Though I did a little too much "mic hogging" that evening, you can clearly hear just how bright and wonderful my brother Danny was.
As with the first Mathom album, we had a blast, and came up with some pretty interesting music.
WHO NEEDS A WIFE?
I get up in the morning, turn on AOL
My first priority is check my mail
I look up my favorite
Chat room on the internet
I look for all my friends there
At least one's on that I can share
Internet gossip and rumors too
We like to talk about Cochran's Zoo
REFRAIN
My life revolves around this screen
You net-heads know just what I mean
I sit here day by day by day
Wasting my whole life away
I'm too afraid to go outside
Behind this screen I choose to hide
CHORUS
Thank the heavens for the microchip
Without it, I don't know where I'd fit
I can't imagine what it must have been like
Before computers became part of life
Going out to work every day
Braving the elements is such a hard way
I'll stay here for the rest of my life
I've got a computer―who needs a wife?
I was on the web today
When I saw this naked lady
She was so fine, she made me
Get all hard and shake at the knees
Her tits were firm and her ass was tight
Think I'll dream about her all night tonight
The one I dreamt of the night before
Got me all hard so now I'm sore
I can still hear her siren's calls
And when I move I can feel my blue balls
REFRAIN
CHORUS
Everything I need is at my fingertips
From astrophysics to pussy lips
I sit in front of my magic screen
That holds all this knowledge I hope to glean
I love this machine with all of my heart
'cause it doesn't care when I burp or fart
It takes me all over this big wide world
But it can't hold my head when I get drunk and hurl
But I wouldn't trade this thing for all my life
'cause I got a computer―who needs a wife?
